Ivy League Universities The Ivy League is an athletic association of eight American universities who are better known for their elite academic standards than any sporting events. The Ivy League was founded in 1954 and consists of eight Northeastern United States Universities: Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania. The name Ivy League came from the ivy plants that have traditionally covered the university buildings. Another name for the Ivy League schools is the Ancient Eight as all but Cornell was founded during the American colonial period. Ivy League universities are amongst the best-known and prestigious schools of higher learning in the world and they consistently rank in the top percentiles in terms of financial endowments and distinguished faculty members. None of these universities is particularly large in student size but the impact of their graduating classes has been immense with almost all recent United States Presidents coming from these universities. They are also home to some of the world’s pre-eminent scholars, teachers and scientists and their faculties include many Nobel Prize winners in a variety of fields of study and endeavor. The members of the Ivy League include Brown University in Rhode Island that was founded in 1764 as Rhode Island College. Columbia University that was established in New York City, New York as Kings College in 1754. Cornell University in Ithaca, New York that was founded in 1865. Dartmouth College that was established in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1769. Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts as the New College in 1636. The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania founded in 1749 as the Academy of Philadelphia. Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey that was founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey. Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School. There were some rumblings about setting up an athletics association amongst these eight elite schools since the 1930’s but no formal moves were made to make it happen until around 1945. That year, the eight now Ivy League school presidents entered into an agreement to build an alliance to further intercollegiate football amongst the schools. That allowed competition between the schools in football to grow even more popular and by 1952 there was an agreement that provided for regular games between the Ivy League schools. By 1954 this had blossomed into the Ivy League Athletic Association and in 1956 had expanded to a variety of intercollegiate sports and sporting events. The Ivy League was born and has continued to grow every year since.
